She sang with soul, the deepest kind of soul, but maybe there’s something deeper than soul, something that wells up from some place sacred, beautiful, and good, some place like the prayer we don’t even know we’re saying, some place that remembers Exodus, remembers even Egypt, a place inside that remembers the Middle Passage, Slavery, the Trail of Tears, the Depression and the Dust Bowl, maybe even remembers the Flood and Noah’s Dove returning with the freshly plucked olive leaf.
